About Kennel Cough

Kennel cough is the term commonly used to describe canine Infectious tracheobronchitis. In short a this means a contagious cough. It can be caused by a range of viruses and bacteria but the most common causes are a bacterial infection, bordatella bronchiseptica and/or a viral infection parainfluenza. The disease can spread rapidly, even in the best run kennels. As dogs are infectious before they even show symptoms the disease often appears as sudden outbreaks.

Once your pet is infected symptoms appear within 5-7 days with most animals showing a classic harsh honking cough, sometimes having coughing fits to the extent of being sick. Sneezing and runny eyes can also develop. Although most dogs do not progress to have serious complications such as pneumonia, the distressing cough can last for up to 6 weeks even with treatment.
