Kidney failure is one of the most common health problems suffered by cats, particularly as they grow older. It affects around 10% of cats over 8 years old and up to 30% of cats over 15 years old.
But don't despair - help is at hand. In recent years there have been advances in our ability to both detect and treat this disease. Even simple measures such as a change in diet can more than double the life expectancy of a cat with chronic kidney disease. Many of the symptoms of kidney disease are not evident physically until the problem is quite advanced and few cats are diagnosed until at least 80% of the kidney’s function has been lost. The earlier a problem is detected the better the chance of prolonging a good quality of life. North Road Veterinary Centre has introduced a Kidney Screening service to detect chronic kidney disese at an early stage and it's both cheap and easy for you! We'll give you a kit with non-absorbent cat litter to collect a urine sample. You get the sample, we'll check it out. If we see warning signs of kidney disease then we'll suggest further tests. Simple! Screening for kidney disease
